The Ethos Award recognizes individuals who advance the engagement of Black and Brown people in the world of equestrian sports.
Founded in 2022 by Roberta Wilmore & Jess Saalfield, The Ethos Award is a biannual celebration of joy and representation. In the ongoing effort to make history known, we honor the powerful, inspiring, and revolutionary leadership of Black and Brown equestrians, past and present. Our Gala is hosted at different equestrian venues across the country to support our mission of inclusivity and accessibility, and to reach a wider audience.
Roberta Wilmore has always been inspired to encourage diversity in equestrian activities. Her story in the sport includes four decades of teaching and coaching equestrians of all ages and disciplines. Roberta is an executive director and a consultant who specializes in equity and inclusion work. She lives on a farm in Massachusetts with her partner, three equines, and their dog.
Jess Saalfield rode horses for 20 years competing in both three-day eventing and show jumping. She now races triathlon. She is a practicing psychotherapist who lives in DC with her two daughters and their dog. She works for reproductive justice and fights for equity and inclusion. This project has allowed her to integrate two of her passions – equestrian sports and social justice.
